Annoying Flies Around Compost

Over the last couple of weeks, the little flies have gone nuts. They are fungal gnats and love the rotting fruit, so we are hoping that by getting a better mix of compost materials (scrunched up damp newspaper, cardboard, manure and maybe some rock dust if we can get hold of it…) we can get the bins working better and reduce the number of flies which swarm annoyingly when you open the Aerobin lids. In the meantime, we are spraying the outside of the bins with pyrethrin.

More suggestions welcome in the comments.
